In this lesson, students will compare the amount of water they use in daily life with the amount allotted for each person each day on the Space Shuttle. This investigation will require many different mathematics skills such as estimation, capacity, weight, and data analysis. It is imperative parents help their students at home estimate the amount of water they use in their daily lives. Every other aspect will be done during class time. The teacher will guide the students through this investigation and the whole class will unit their data in order to do a proper investigation. This activity usually interests many students and they are excited to learn more.

The students will then compare their results and explain which method was more accurate and more useful. This lesson provides an introduction into standardized units. At home parents can discuss with their students various measurements used daily in their lives to prepare the students for more measurements which they will be learning in upcoming weeks. Also the teacher can connect this historical nonstandard units to ancient cultures which can lead into a multidisciplinary project.
